2026 WRHC Conference (University of Nevada, Las Vegas)

Battle Born: Crossroads and Opportunities

In a city like Las Vegas, known for spectacle and endless reinvention, the 2026 conference theme “Battle Born: Crossroads and Opportunities” has special meaning. Our state’s nickname reflects resilience in the face of challenge. Shaped by the diversity of locals and visitors alike, UNLV is a campus surrounded by and welcoming to the larger community. As honors students, we too find ourselves at crossroads: moments of choice, change, and discovery.

The 2026 WRHC Conference invites us to think about how the challenges we’ve faced—academic, personal, and global—have prepared us for new opportunities ahead. In a city that thrives on transformation, we ask: How do we transform struggles into strengths? How can we use our unique perspectives to create new paths forward? By coming together in Las Vegas, conference attendees will answer questions like these and have the chance to share the stories, exchange ideas, and inspire one another.

PLACE

place, n. /plās/

A particular part or region of space; a physical locality, a locale; a spot, a location. Also: a region or part of the earth’s surface.

place, v. /plās/

put in a particular position; find a home or employment for.

The places people come from influence who they are, and people impact the places they inhabit. Sometimes, even after a place is gone, its memory and its impact remain. But onto place we can build more: transplacedisplace, misplace. We can be placeists or feel placeless. What makes a place what it is? What happens to a place after it is replaced with a new place? What parts of a place can be left behind, and what can we take with us? Finally, what happens to places when people don’t think about tomorrow?

2024 WRHC Conference (California State University, Long Beach)

Beyond the Breaking Point: Searching for Buoyancy

Undoubtedly most of us came out of the COVID pandemic feeling a bit off balance and wanting to steady our upside-down lives. Despite the return to more normal daily activities and routines, we live differently today as survivors of the pandemic. We look around and know that there are pressing human, environmental, social, and cultural elements that need our attention. While you come explore the city of Long Beach, discover through a visit to the Aquarium of the Pacific, contemplate our Hispanic-Serving (HSI) and Asian-American, Native American, Pacific-Islander-Serving (AANAPISI) CSULB, enjoy our keynote conversation with filmmaker Dr. Jennifer Abod, may you gain new insights into our human experience and the tools at our disposal for collective and continued survival and well-being. Enjoy!
